Athens, the glorious city of Greece (Guide, what to see and do)

My first trip to Greece was starting with Athens, the capital of more than three thousand years that knew how to illuminate much of the western world. From my seven days in the Greek capital I brought lots of sites visited (and to be realistic so much more to see). From the outset it must be understood that this city is roughly visited in a few days, but can be extended to much more. In so many places it is an open-air museum of that past of Greek culture, a city steeped in history in layers that comes to light in every corner.

To understand the tangible richness of that past, it is enough to know that in Athens to make a civil work that requires an excavation can take a few years, because it is not difficult to find some archaeological treasure that must be rescued.

My trip to Athens and Greece. Before I go on, I’m going to tell you that on my trip to Athens (I spent a week) and Greece I made my visits to islands such as Ikaria (an island somewhat apart and very quiet of which

Many of the hotels in this neighbourhood and others in Athens can be found in the

Guided tours to the Acropolis.

It is possible that so much information and places to see overwhelm you when choosing how to visit the Acropolis, so I will also share with you the options of guided tours in Spanish and private among the most demanded:

You can recognize the remains of the square surrounded by public buildings, with the monumental portico (Gate of Athena Arquegetis) and the

Barrio Kolonaki and Monte Licabeto (Mirador)

This is the chic neighbourhood of Athens, the one of the wealthy classes, luxury shops and restaurants + hotels of category. Monte Licabeto with its 299 meters high competes for the best panoramic views of Athens. This mountain can be climbed by funicular, although I also recommend doing the descent on foot by the path that reaches the district of Kolonaki (for this the advice is to get the ticket only ascending the Licabeto). On the blog I also did

Plaka Neighbourhood

As much had already spoken in the previous part of accommodation, I just insist that this is the most touristic neighborhood on the slopes of the Acropolis. It is an area that looks like a village for its low buildings and so picturesque. You can see the post with a lot of photos and details that I did to this neighborhood:

Psiri Neighbourhood

This is a trendy neighborhood of lively streets and people sitting on outdoor terraces to watch people pass by. There are plenty of bars and taverns to simply choose to sit down and live life as one more Athenian, or breathe its counter-cultural atmosphere. It is located west of Monastikari Square.

Anafiotika Neighbourhood

I confess that this neighborhood is one of my earrings because I overlooked it in my trip (even though I had in my mental notes to visit it).

Excursions from Athens.

11 excursions from Athens to do in the day.

Athens is a perfect spot to base and extend day, as from the Greek capital you can do many excursions in the day. From visiting islands, archeological ruins, cities like Delphi, the list is also very long. I recommend that you directly see one by one 11 ideas for organized excursions from Athens in this post.

Note to rent a car in Athens: if you need to rent a car for getaways, don’t forget that you can do it from the blog, and access discounts on search results from this car rental search engine (we already manage more than 1000 bookings from the blog, and of course this is at no extra cost to our readers).

5 excursions from Athens for several days.

There are also many options for organised (and in Spanish) excursions from Athens to both the islands and mainland Greece.

For starters, if you are looking to extend your trip through Greece to the islands, I recommend you watch the post about going to the islands of Santorini and Mykonos.

But you can also evaluate these organized excursions of several days:

Classic four-day circuit to classical Greece (Epidauro, Mycenae, Delphi and Meteora)

Two-day trip to Delphi and Meteora

Escape to Mykonos for two or more days.

Escape to Santorini for two or more days

Four-day escape to Mykonos and Santorini

Is there more in Athens? I’m sure you will, so don’t hesitate to comment, leave me doubts and suggestions for more activities. Of course I will answer as soon as possible.
