Where’s Shirakawago?

Shirakawago is a small village that was declared a World Heritage Site in 1995 due to its well-kept and eye-catching traditional houses.

The village is located about 75 kilometers south of Kanazawa. It is located in Gifu Prefecture, within the Chubu region of central Japan. You can see it more clearly on our map of Japan.

What’s the best way to get from Kanazawa to Shirakawago?

Shirakawago is a place in the middle of the mountains and no train goes there, so the most comfortable way to get to this beautiful village is by bus.

Buses to Shirakawago, from Hokutetsu Highway Buses Company, depart from Dock 2 at the bus terminal at the East Gate of Kanazawa Station.

Buses depart approximately every half hour from 8:10 a.m. to 2:40 p.m. and take about 1 hour and 15 minutes.

How much does it cost to go to Shirakawago?

The trip to Shirakawago is not included in the JR Pass, so either you have it or you won’t have to pay. The one-way trip to Shirakawago costs 2,000 JPY per person (3,600 JPY roundtrip), although if your idea is to visit it and then continue to Takayama you can get a ticket for both buses for 3,600 JPY.

You should keep in mind that you have to book the ticket in advance, so our recommendation is that you book it as soon as you arrive in Kanazawa (we forgot to do it and finally we had to leave much later than we would have liked and could spend much less time in Shirakawago). You will have to do it in the Hokutetsu company offices, which are located between docks 2 and 3 of the bus terminal. You can also book online at the following page.
