Himeji is one of the places we recommend you to visit without any doubt, especially to visit its magnificent castle, which is world heritage. The city is about 90 kilometers west of Osaka. It is located in the prefecture of Hyōgo, within the Kinki region of eastern Japan. You can see it more clearly on our map of Japan.

What’s the best way to get from Osaka to Himeji?

Undoubtedly the easiest way to travel from Osaka to Himeji is by train. There are two different routes to do this tour, which vary mainly by the duration of the trip and the price.

How to get from Osaka to Himeji by train Shinkansen

The fastest way to get from Osaka to Himeji is by Shinkansen train. There are several Shinkansen that make this tour, each with more or less stops, but normally it will take between 29 and 36 minutes depending on the time you go. These trains depart from Shin-Osaka Station, 4 minutes by local train from Osaka Main Station.

How to get from Osaka to Himeji by ‘normal’ train

If you prefer to travel by ‘normal’ train, it is possible to do so by the JR Special Rapid Service for Himeji train. This train, which departs from Osaka Station, takes about 73 minutes to Himeji (it’s the last stop, so you can’t miss it).

How much does it cost to go to Himeji?

Of course the price is the most important thing when choosing between going to Himeji in Shinkansen or by ‘normal’ train.

If you have the JR Pass, go to Himeji will be completely free in any of the options, so in this case our recommendation is certainly to go in Shinkansen.

If you do not have a JR Pass, the Shinkansen trip costs 3,220 JPY per person in an unreserved seat and 3,740 JPY per person if you reserve a seat in advance. If you decide to go in the Special Rapid, the price is 1,490 JPY per person.
