Where’s Kanazawa?

Although Kanazawa is not as well known as other cities in Japan, it is certainly a great place for a day trip, and it can also serve as a ‘base camp’ to go to the famous Shirakawago.

The city is about 290 kilometers north of Osaka. It is located in Ishikawa Prefecture, within the Chubu region of central Japan. You can see it more clearly on our map of Japan.

What’s the best way to get from Osaka to Kanazawa?

Undoubtedly the easiest way to travel from Osaka to Kanazawa is by train. You can do this tour from both Osaka and Shin-Osaka stations (where Shinkansen trains stop) using the Ltd Exp Thunderbird Osaka-Kanazawa trains, which depart approximately every half hour from 6:30 in the morning.

Best of all, you won’t have to change trains at all and the last stop on the train is Kanazawa, so it’s a very easy route without any loss. The tour lasts about 2 hours and 45 minutes.

How much does it cost to go to Kanazawa?

If you have the JR Pass, going to Kanazawa will be completely free.

If you do not have a JR Pass, the trip costs 7,130 JPY per person in an unreserved seat and 7,650 JPY per person if you reserve a seat in advance, regardless of whether you take it at Osaka or Shin-Osaka station.
