How to get from Shirakawago to Takayama [OPTIONS + PRICES + DURATION]

Summary of contents of this post

One of the best things about Japan is that it is a country where it is very easy to move between cities. If the Shinkansen fast trains do not arrive in a city, the less fast trains will arrive, and there are always bad bus networks that will take you where the trains do not. But although moving is simple, from Comiviajeros we are creating a great complete guide of Japan in which, in addition to telling you what we recommend you visit, we also tell you how to make the most important journeys in Japan to make your trip to this beautiful country easier. This time we tell you how to go from Shirakawago to Takayama.

Where’s Takayama?

Takayama is a beautiful city that should not be missing on your route through Japan even if it is not one of the best known. Just travel the route between temples called Teramachi is worth a lot, so do not discard it from your route without giving it a chance.

Takayama is located in the province of Gifu, within the Chubu region and is located 70 kilometers southeast of Shirakawago. You will be able to see it much better in our complete map of Japan.

How to get from Shirakawago to Takayama?

As you may know, Shirakawago does not have a train station, so the most common way to get around is by bus.

There are two companies that make this route, the Hokutetsu Highway Buses and the Nohi Bus which you can take from the Shirakawago bus station and which will drop you off at the Takayama Nohi Bus Center, Takayama station and which is located next to the city train station.

The schedule of these buses is from 6:43 to 19:43 and leave approximately every hour (both companies alternate). The journey takes about 50 minutes.

How much does it cost to go to Takayama?

The bus line between Shirakawago and Takayama does not allow the use of the JR Pass, so you will have to pay even if you have such a pass. The one-way trip costs 2,470 JPY per person (4,420 JPY if you want to go and return).

Nearly half of the buses on this tour require advance booking, so I recommend that you purchase tickets as soon as you arrive in Shirakawago.

También has de tener en cuenta, tal y como te comentamos en el post sobre cómo ir de Kanazawa a Shirakawago, que existen billetes que hacen la ruta Kanazawa -> Shirakawago -> Takayama and cost 3,600 JPY per person.
