How to get to the Hollywood poster

In this post we explain how to get to the Hollywood sign, not only to the viewpoint below but also just behind the Hollywood lyrics from where there is a mind-blowing panoramic view of Los Angeles.

On our last trip to Los Angeles we finally fulfilled one of those traveler’s dreams that you know you will one day fulfill, to be behind one of the most famous signs in the world!

Every time we have traveled to Los Angeles we postponed the ascent to the Hollywood cartel, we have to dedicate a full morning to it and we never found the moment with all the list of things to see and do in Los Angeles that we always carry, but finally that day arrived!

First of all I want to clarify that climbing the Hollywood cartel is completely legal, if you have any doubt about it, what is completely prohibited is jumping the fence and approaching the letters, everything is controlled with security cameras and motion detectors.

Keep reading to find out how to get to the Hollywood sign! With all the data you need.

How to get to the Hollywood poster – INDICATIONS

1. Park the car at Beachwood Dr

We recommend that you park your car on this street (where allowed) and from here ask for a Uber car to go up to the pedestrian entrance to the park.

If you are in shape you can consider walking up, but we do not recommend it because then there is quite a slope to the sign and you will want to have the batteries charged.

We parked a little further away, in the vicinity of the Church of Scientology, but out of sheer ignorance, in Beachwood Dr. there was a lot of parking and being closer to Uber’s trip will be cheaper for you.

Ask Uber’s car to take you to 3390 Deronda Drive. Below you have the map.

2. Reaches the pedestrian gate

Uber’s car will drop you off at this pedestrian entrance to the park, this door is open from dawn to dusk.

About twenty meters after crossing it, you’ll see two forks in the road.

The path on the left takes you to the viewpoint of the Hollywood poster, many people stay in this viewpoint because of ignorance or because they do not want to climb to the other.

The road on the right leads us to our destination, the back of the Hollywood sign.

3. The ascent begins

We take the road to the right, from here to the Hollywood sign is about two kilometers, not much but the slope makes it a bit hard, especially if you’re not in shape and it’s hot.

We’re not very fit and we were able to get it up without any problems, but bring good shoes and water! Below we give you some more advice.

As you go up and gain height the views of Los Angeles are more incredible.

It took us about 35 minutes to get from the front door to the Hollywood sign, going slowly.

Views going up to the Hollywood poster

You will find some posters like these, remember that your destination is NOT Hollywood Sign, but Mt Lee Summit – Back of Hollywood Sign. The first one takes you back to the viewpoint of the previous photo.

4. Arrival at the Hollywood poster

There’s a moment when you stop seeing the sign, it’s good to look at the GPS of the mobile to see how much is left of the way.

And just around the last bend, there it is!

Now you can start hallucinating with the size of the letters, no less than 13.7 meters!

Admire the views, take thousands of photos to remember and above all enjoy it to the fullest!

Tips for Getting to the Hollywood Poster

You can only go up on foot or by bike, on the way only a few safety cars pass.

Don’t drive up to the front door, it’s forbidden to park in the whole neighborhood and in front of us they put several fines.

Try to climb before 09:30, the sun hits hard (although it will depend on the dates and how cloudy the day is) and there is almost no shade during the tour.

In addition, going up you will soon find very few people, most were neighbors of the neighborhood walking their dogs or exercising, but no tourists.

Take water, there are no fountains or anything similar during the tour, especially if you go up in summer.

There are some stretches without mobile coverage, bear this in mind but you don’t need it either.

If you’re a trekking lover, from here you can also go to the Griffith Observatory, which has become even more famous for appearing in the movie La La Land. If you don’t want to walk any more don’t worry, you can even get to the observatory by car.

Watch out! Smoking and lighting fires are forbidden, $1,000 fine.

The park opens and closes its doors with the sun, it does not have a fixed schedule (as far as we know).

Enjoy! You’re on one of the most famous signs in the world!

Curiosities of the Hollywood cartel:

It was placed in 1923 and at first it was HOLLYWOODLAND, it had advertising character and its mission was to attract buyers to the new urbanization that was being constructed in the zone, until 1949 it did not remain in HOLLYWOOD.
In 1932, actress Peg Entwistle committed suicide by jumping from the letter H.
In 1978 money was raised to restore the poster, each donor gave $27,777 for each of the nine letters.
In 2005 the original 1923 poster was sold on Ebay for $450,000.
Each letter is 13.7 metres high and the full sign is 106.7 metres high.
The nonprofit Hollywood Sign Trust takes care of the care and maintenance of the sign.
In some photos it may appear to be wavy, but it is an effect of the hill where it is, it is really straight.
