Where to stay in Los Angeles

Our preferred area to stay in Los Angeles is undoubtedly the city of Santa Monica, although West Hollywood and Venice Beach are also good options.

Downtown Los Angeles isn’t a bad choice either, but it’s the least practical of all the ones we recommend, in our opinion.

We have also included in this list of accommodations in Los Angeles some hotels near LAX international airport, where it is quite likely that your plane will arrive or depart.

1. Accommodation in Santa Monica, the best area to stay in Los Angeles

Santa Monica is one of our favourite cities and we almost always end up booking our accommodation here.

This city has stolen our heart, its small houses with gardens in which they leave the newspaper at the door in the mornings, the dock with its amusement park that we have seen in so many movies and its Californian rolllete, we love it!

We have never felt insecure at any time of the day or night, and it seems perfect for us to enjoy a few days and know all the things to see and do in Los Angeles.

We have visited the city on several occasions and have stayed in hotels, hostels and apartments of Airbnb, here we leave our recommendations.

Points of interest in Santa Monica:

Santa Monica Quay
3st Promenade
The beaches of Santa Monica with their guard houses

Recommended accommodation in Monica:

Ocean Park Hotel, The hotel where we have stayed the most times, the catch is that almost all rooms have shared bathroom. No luxuries, it’s fair enough, but very clean and enough to spend a few nights. It has free parking and a bus stop almost at the door. Hotel Carmel by The Sea This very well located, near the dock of Santa Monica and 3st Promenade. HI Los Angeles – Santa Monica Hostel – Modern hostel, of the HI chain with private and shared rooms, very well located.

2. Venice Beach Accommodation

Staying in Venice Beach is another good option if you’re looking for a place to stay in Los Angeles, it’s a young neighborhood with a lot of roll, healthys cafes, Yoga centers and cool shops.

Although the area closest to the promenade is full of vagabonds at nightfall, we can not say that it is dangerous.

By day you’ll only see skaters, surfers, chai lattes and people exercising.

Points of interest in Venice Beach:

The canals of Venice Beach
Muscle Beach
Venice Skate Park
Abbot Kinney – A street full of cafes and cool shops, our prefe ♥

Recommended accommodations in Venice Beach:

Venice Suites – Located in front of the beach, has private bathroom and very good opinions. AIR Venice on the Beach – Apartments with a small kitchen on the first line of Samesun Venice Beach. It is a hostel that has double rooms with shared bathroom, the best: location and price. Erwin Hotel, a hotel whim.

This last time in California we stayed quite a few days and we wanted something different, so looking for accommodations in Los Angeles in Airbnb and we decided on this garden house in Venice Beach, the truth was a very wise choice!

You can see it in our outstanding stories of Instagram with the title California.

Remember that you have a 25€ discount on your first booking on Airbnb!

Venice Beach is also home to The Butcher’s Daughter, our favorite breakfast cafeteria.

3. Hollywood Accommodation

In Hollywood you will also find plenty of accommodation, we can not say that is our preferred area but can be an option to assess.

Hollywood is known worldwide for being the Mecca of cinema, you will walk on the stars of the walk of fame, you will be a step away from Dolby Theatre (formerly Kodak Theatre) where they deliver the Oscars and if you raise your head you will find the well-known Hollywood sign on the slope of the mountain.

Even so, in our opinion it is more glamorous when it’s on TV than when you see it with your own eyes, but you’ll tell us!

The most recommended area to stay in Hollywood is the one that goes from the beginning of the walk of fame (Hollywood Blvd with N Las Brea Ave) to the Hollywood Vine metro stop.

It’s the part where the best hotels are located, and it’s full of restaurants and shops.

Passing the metro station, and further east, the atmosphere becomes more and more degraded, shops of dubious reputation and a less pleasant environment for the tourist. In our opinion, it is not the best place to stay in Los Angeles, especially at nightfall.

Points of interest in Hollywood:

Walk of Fame
Dolby Theatre where the Oscars gala is held
Hollywood sign

Recommended accommodations in Hollywood:

Days Inn by Wyndham Hollywood – Near the promenade of fame, with swimming pool, inexpensive option of the low cost chain Days Inn. Hollywood Celebrity Hotel Very well located and with very good opinions, not the cheapest option. Loews Hollywood Hotel Not the cheapest option, but it’s a safe bet.

4. Accommodation in downtown Los Angeles

Staying in the city centre is often a good option in virtually every city in the world, but in our opinion staying in downtown Los Angeles is not the best option.

The main activity in this area is business and is full of office buildings, virtually no one lives in downtown Los Angeles, except some beggars who are part of the city and sleep where they can good.

Downtown Los Angeles does not have many things to do, we recommend you stay in a hotel with good scores and near a subway stop that will connect you with major tourist attractions such as Hollywood, Santa Monica or LAX airport, among others.

Points of interest in downtown Los Angeles:

Recommended accommodations in downtown Los Angeles:

American Hotel, unbeatable value for money, one of the best options to stay in downtown Los Angeles. Freehand Los Angeles is one of the hotels with the most positive opinions in Los Angeles, over 5000! It also has a swimming pool on the roof and a metro two blocks away.

5. Los Angeles LAX Airport Accommodation

We always like to give some options to sleep near the airport, and in the case of LAX most accommodations include free transfer from/to the airport.

But our recommendation is that you take the rental car as soon as you arrive, this way you will save time.

We also have a post on how to get from Los Angeles airport to downtown or to your hotel.

And another very interesting one with tips for renting a car in the United States.

Recommended accommodations at Los Angeles LAX airport:

Best Western Plus Suites Hotel – Free airport transfer, the best value for money. Quality Inn & Suites Los Angeles Airport – LAX – Free transfer Crowne Plaza Los Angeles International Airport – Thousands of good opinions, free transfer with the airport.

6. Staying in Los Angeles in an Airbnb apartment

Staying in an Airbnb apartment in Los Angeles can be a very interesting option if you are going to stay many days or if you are more than three people.

Some recommendations for booking accommodation on Airbnb:

Never be the first to book accommodation
Try to make the host (what they call on the platform) a superhost.
Always read the opinions of previous guests
Make all payments through the platform

We also give you 25€ discount for your first booking on Airbnb.

7. Los Angeles Avoided Areas

Like most big cities, there are areas that are not the best for tourists.

There are some neighborhoods that are best avoided:

Skid Row, are four streets in the center of Los Angeles, avoid it both day and night.
Downtown Los Angeles, at night is not the best area.
The areas of Pico Union, South Los Angeles, West Lake, Boyle Heights, and Culver City are marked on the map below with a red X. The areas of Pico Union, South Los Angeles, West Lake, Boyle Heights, and Culver City are marked on the map below with a red X.

Even if it seems like a lot of dangerous areas, don’t be frightened and don’t let them take away your desire to travel, the truth is that we in our different trips to Los Angeles have never, and I repeat never, had a bad experience because of insecurity or anything like that.

We recommend you to stay in Los Angeles in the areas mentioned above and you will not have any problem.

As a recommendation, always read the comments of previous guests no one better than them to convey the security or insecurity of the neighborhood.
