Where to stay in San Francisco

In San Francisco it has two zones where the great majority of hotels are concentrated, one is the square Union Square and another the port Fisherman’s Wharf.

There are other areas farther away or worse communicated with public transport that, in our opinion, are not the best to take advantage of a trip to San Francisco, especially if it is your first time in the city.

The best area to stay in San Francisco in our opinion is Union Square, has a lot of accommodation and is very well connected, although this last time in the city we decided for an Airbnb in a residential area, below I tell you in detail.

Union Square, the best place to stay in San Francisco

This is our preferred area to stay in San Francisco, there are plenty of hotels, restaurants and public transportation, and you’ll have a lot of things to do in San Francisco within walking distance.

It is not difficult to find accommodation in Union Square, but here are some recommendations, the latter we know first hand.

Recommended accommodations in Union Square:

Beresford Arms This Victorian-style hotel is included in the National Register of Historic Places, has over 4000 opinions and good marks.

Hotel Nikko San Francisco, Not the cheapest, but it’s a great option if for example it’s your honeymoon.

Hotel Beresford, “economic” option in the center of San Francisco with more than 6000 opinions.

Grant Hotel, great for price and location, but no luxuries!

2. Fisherman’s Wharf, one of San Francisco’s most touristy areas

This area is one of the most famous and touristic of San Francisco, here are the pier 39 where a colony of sea lions lives, also depart from here the ferries to Alcatraz.

It is very well connected to the centre thanks to the trams and there is a lot of restaurants and activities on offer.

Recommended accommodation at Fisherman’s Wharf:

Comfort Inn By the Bay Comfort Inn chain hotels are a safe choice, clean and simple hotels

San Remo Hotel, cheaper option but with shared bathroom.

Hotel Zephyr San Francisco, is a very new hotel with a very modern decoration, has more than 4500 comments and very good note.

3. Where to stay in cheap San Francisco

We can’t say that San Francisco is a cheap city to sleep in, but if we consider a few points we can save a few dollars:

Try not to make your visit coincide with the weekend.
Book your accommodation as soon as possible, the good, nice and cheap ones are sold out before.
Value other options besides hotels, such as Airbnb, you also have 25€ discount for your first booking.

Hotels in San francisco cheap:

Hotel Beresford With more than 6000 opinions and a good score make it a good and cheap option.

Touchstone Hotel – City Center, in Union Square, very fair with more than 2500 opinions and an acceptable grade.

San Remo Hotel A cheaper option with a good grade, but with shared bathrooms.

4. Accommodation in San Francisco in Airbnb

Another way to live the city is to stay in an apartment through Airbnb, did you know that this famous platform was born in the city of San Francisco in 2008?

For comfort and price, it was the choice we made on our last trip to San Francisco.

We found this apartment 100% recommended! It is in a residential area and is located in the lower part of the house of some retirees muuuuy majos!

Before booking accommodation at Airbnb, we carefully read the comments of previous guests, no one better than them to give an honest opinion about the apartment.

It is also interesting that the owner is a superhost, this award is given by Airbnb to owners who have very good opinions and is a safe bet.

We leave you 25€ for your first booking on Airbnb

5. Hotels with parking in San Francisco

If you are thinking of renting a car to do a route through California or a route along the West Coast, we recommend parking near a tram stop and move on public transport, parking in San Francisco is quite expensive and complicated.

Another option is to book a hotel with free parking, but I can tell you that it is not an easy task!

Hotels in San Francisco with free parking:

Beck’s Motor Lodge, in our opinion the best accommodation option with free parking in San Francisco. Located in the Castro neighborhood, known for its LGTB atmosphere, it is also a good place to stay in San Francisco.

Cow Hollow Inn and Suites, another option with free parking and good reviews.

6. Areas not recommended for lodging in San Francisco

As in most major cities there are areas that are not the best for tourists, in this case, the areas not recommended for accommodation in San Francisco are:

Mission District
The Tenderloin
China Town

They are the least suitable neighborhoods for tourists to stay, the only one of the three that you will surely pass through is China Town, this neighborhood during the day is very safe but at nightfall becomes an area not very recommended for tourists.

All areas not recommended for accommodation in San Francisco have been marked with a red X on the map below.

But let it be known that San Francisco is a very safe city, and we are convinced that you will not have any setbacks! 🙂

7. San Francisco Airport Accommodation

Near the airport there are many hotels that offer free transfer from/to the airport, maybe if your plane arrives very late or especially if it leaves very early you are interested in sleeping in one of them.

Accommodation at San Francisco airport:

The Inn Ranch, Signature Collection

Hotel Aura SFO Airport

Both hotels offer free transfer from/to airport and free parking.

We always carry a travel insurance to be calm before any setback, but in the United States the need to carry it is even more accentuated by the issue of health.

It’s not worth the risk, and travel insurance for a week or a fortnight won’t make the travel budget suffer, and if we need it, it will come in handy!
