Summary of contents of this post
In a place in La Mancha… whose name I want to remember, is the hotel La Caminera, an oasis of luxury in the middle of olive groves and vineyards of La Mancha. And what an oasis! I wish we could spend every weekend there. In this post we are going to tell you how we lived our experience in La Caminera with hair and signs: the room, the spa, the massages, the swimming pool, the breakfast, the gastronomy…
Surroundings of the hotel La Caminera
Taking advantage of the fact that we needed a weekend of relaxation and disconnection, we looked for a cool place where we could combine rest with gastronomy. And we found the hotel La Caminera! This Manchego peace haven is located in the municipality of Torrenueva, about 15 minutes from Valdepeñas and about 2.5 hours from Madrid by car. So it’s perfect for a weekend getaway if like us you live in or around the capital.
What makes La Caminera Hotel special?
The hotel La Caminera for us has been special because it has made us feel special, like at home. We got a brutal deal. Seriously, rarely have we felt so well treated in a hotel (and it’s not the first time we’ve stayed in a 5-star hotel). The staff, although young and well prepared, is always attentive to everything, even the smallest details.
Entrance to La Caminera Hotel
We can say that he undoubtedly deserves every one of the 5 stars he bears. And when you pay the price of staying in a hotel like this, but you don’t mind paying it because every euro is worth it, because it’s a sure success. What’s more, we’re looking forward to coming back to 😉
Our experience at La Caminera Hotel
Friday. 15:00 hours. Fran leaves work, I pick him up with the car in his office and we head to the hotel La Caminera, located in a remote area of Ciudad Real and surrounded by olive groves and vineyards. After suffering the usual traffic jams on Friday afternoons to leave Madrid and after 2 hours and a half of travel, we arrived in paradise.
From the road we can see the hotel building presiding over the top of a small hill. And it is true that at that time we still had no idea how comfortable we were going to be those two days we spent there.
Arrival at La Caminera
As soon as you enter the building, you realize that it’s like immersing yourself in the typical country hacienda so common in Latin American soap operas, with a large courtyard presided over by a fountain in the center that connects the hotel’s four main corridors and forms a square.
Reception at La Caminera HotelReception at La Caminera Hotel
The hall is spectacular and tastefully decorated. As soon as you enter, on the left you will find La Retama (the restaurant we have already talked about on the blog), on the right the Golf Club shop and in front of the counter for check-in. After making all the arrangements quickly and with a kindness that is always appreciated, they accompanied us to our room to show us the way.
Courtyard of the hotel La Caminera
The room we chose was simple. We didn’t opt for a suite because we knew that a ‘normal’ room would suffice. And we weren’t wrong. The room is presided over by a HUGE and super comfortable bed. Really, it’s one of the most comfortable beds we’ve ever tried.

It has a large wardrobe that also houses a minibar with quite expensive products (as in all hotel minibars), a huge television, a sofa with a table perfect for sitting to read, for example, and a small terrace overlooking the main courtyard.
The bathroom is very spacious, quite a bit more than the room in comparison. It has a double washbasin, a bathtub with hydromassage and a very wide and super comfortable shower.
The spa of the hotel La Caminera
One of the main claims of the hotel La Caminera is its spa. And it makes all the sense in the world because it’s wonderful. It’s not very big, but it has everything you could ask for from a spa, including tranquility and space for relaxation.
In addition to the main swimming pool with all the jets, jacuzzi and bubble beds, it has a Turkish bath, sauna, thematic showers (with different smells and colours), ice fountain and a room with ‘heated’ sun loungers.
Spa of the hotel La Caminera
What we liked most about the spa, besides the spa itself, is that everything you need to use it (hat, flip-flops, bathrobe, towels, etc…) is provided there and you don’t have to pay absolutely anything. In addition, as it is obligatory to book in order to do the circuit, you ensure that at no time is overcrowded. The time there were more people at the same time we were 5 people in total. And that, to tell you the truth, is a pleasure.
Massages in La Caminera
The spa service, apart from the water area, also offers a massage service, both relaxing and therapeutic. And this is where we’re gonna put the first ‘but’ on the hotel.
As our idea was to make the weekend as relaxing as possible, we did not hesitate to hire a massage for both of us on Saturday afternoon. We chose a ‘thematic’ massage in which you do a previous oil tasting in order to choose the line of products with which the masseurs will then work. The truth is that this previous ritual is entertaining, because you try the oil, they tell you the properties and explain to you how the products that will be used in your massage are inspired by that oil.
The massage is great, but we got something expensive. We pay 240 euros both (120 euros per person per hour of massage). We have made use of this service in other hotels and establishments and the reality is that we found it excessive.
The swimming pool of the hotel La Caminera
And leaving behind the only inconvenience we face in the hotel, we go to one of the strong points: the swimming pool.

The outdoor pool is great, especially for the service. It has hammocks (super comfortable) and umbrellas and from 12:00 to 20:00 hours is attended by a charming boy who is attentive to what you need at all times. You can have drinks and a snack if you like.
Breakfast at La Caminera
As it could not be otherwise, breakfast at the hotel La Caminera is fantastic. They have a super full buffet and you can also order another dish for you to do in the moment. But maybe if you ask for it on Sunday as we (when there is less staff) can not prepare it for you. We order some scrambled eggs and we’re left with the desire.

In the salty section there are breadcrumbs, potato omelette, roasted vegetables, breadcrumbs, sausages… And in the sweet section there is practically everything you can imagine. There is also a great variety of breads and many options if your thing is the healthy breakfast 😉
Other hotel services we don’t test
As we have told you throughout the post, the hotel La Caminera is a super complete accommodation and in addition to all the services we tried, there were others that we did not use but that are worth commenting:
Airstrip. I do not know if you have a private plane, but if so, you should know that in La Caminera have their own airstrip where you can arrive with your jet.golf course. If you are a lover of this sport the hotel also has an 18-hole golf club surrounded by olive trees, experiences organized by the hotel. For stays longer than a weekend, you have the possibility of some experiences proposed by the hotel as wine tastings, sunsets in idyllic places or yoga in the open air. Details that we loved about the hotel La Caminera
The treatment is exquisite. And besides being super correct, it’s a close deal. You feel like home and like family. Before bedtime, while you’re having dinner, they go to your room, open your bed, put your slippers at the foot of the bed and leave you a little bowl with a few sweets so you can go to sleep with a good taste in your mouth.the amenities are from L’Occitane and that’s always a success.the spa is wonderful, it’s super clean and has great views. Everything you need for the spa (flip-flops, hats, towels) is provided at the hotel free of charge. the experience is round and super complete, because in addition to resting and disconnecting, you can enjoy exquisite cuisine without leaving the hotel. the mattress of the bed is almost like touching the sky. Seriously, I wish you could bring him home to me. In addition, you also have a pillow card, which is always a plus.
The gastronomic part of the hotel La Caminera
On Saturday, at lunch time, we were able to enjoy an exquisite meal at Restaurante Retama, which is located inside the hotel but can be visited even if you are not staying there. We have written an independent post about the restaurant to tell you everything well, but the bottom line is that we ate luxuriously and paid 130 euros per person for a meal of more than 10 dishes and pairing.
Retama: mackerel heelRetama: chocolate, hazelnut and orange
In addition, except for fish, all products are from the land, and we think that’s wonderful. If we had to give it a hiccup, it would be that we don’t understand that in the 21st century you have to go to an arranged restaurant to be fed. Is it really necessary?
Restaurant El Prado Cafe Lounge
In addition to Retama, the hotel has another option for lunch and dinner something more informal and also cheaper: the restaurant El Prado Cafe Lounge.
We dined there the two nights we spent at the hotel (we didn’t take the car at all during our stay) and the truth is that we ate very well. When I said cheaper, obviously it is in comparison with Retama, because cheap at all is not 😉

They have an extensive wine list and although the food list is not very long, everything we tasted was super rich, especially the croquettes and steak tartar. It’s not cheap, but I think value for money is pretty good.
The first night we paid 89 euros (32 euros for a bottle of wine) and the second 60 euros (this time we had dinner with water).
How much does it cost to stay at La Caminera Hotel?
I’m not going to fool you, if you make the weekend the same way that we are expensive enough, but the truth is that except for massages, the rest of the money we spend seems like super money well invested. Few times have we had the feeling of really being in a 5 star hotel being in it. And this has been one of those times.
I’m going to break down the price so you know exactly how much each thing costs:
Bed and breakfast for two people for two nights: 410 euros (the spa is included in the price and you can visit it as many times as you want, but requires prior booking).2 one-hour massages for two: 240 euros (there are cheaper options and less time, but I tell you that for us the massages were not worth it) Lunch at the restaurant Retama with pairing for two people: 260 euros.Dinner at the restaurant El Prado: 149 euros.Drinks in the pool throughout the weekend: 18 euros.
All this would make a total of 1,077 euros. It’s a fortune, but it’s super well invested. In addition, if you have a slightly lower budget, you can get to know the hotel, pool and spa, for less than half 😉
