Summary of content of this post
We love car routes, that’s right, and the truth is I don’t know how we haven’t done content like this before, compiling what are for us the best car routes in the world.
We have made many of the ones we are going to recommend you, but we also wanted to include all the ones that are in our bucket list since years ago and that you will find little by little in the future in this blog.
Shall we start?

The best car routes in the world that we have done
If you are a regular reader of this blog, you will know that if there is one type of travel that characterizes us, it is by car. We have made them of all kinds and colors. And not only by car, but also by caravan or camper.
We love the road and enjoy the freedom of traveling with our own car.
The best car routes in the world: we talk about the ones we have made
Keep in mind, that in this list we have included the routes that we have done only since we are together, because in my case, since I was very young I have done this kind of trips with my parents traveling through Spain, Morocco, France, Italy or even El Salvador.
Don’t forget to take out your travel insurance before you go 😉
✅ One of the most important things to consider when preparing a trip is insurance. Never travel without insurance! Why don’t you save up all year long so that your vacation will be twisted by an unforeseen event. And so that in addition to traveling safely, save, we have for you this 5% discount on your insurance with IATI, the insurance company that we trust for all our trips.
Route 66, one of the classics in the lists of best car routes in the world
What are we going to tell you about this wonderful trip if it was our honeymoon? Route 66 is certainly one of the best car routes in the world. And watch out! That’s not just for us to say. Whatever list you’re looking for, you’ll find it. In fact, some people call it ‘The Ultimate Road Trip’.
The best car routes in the world: Route 66
Some people say that the first few miles are boring and that it’s better to focus on the West Coast, but we don’t agree at all, because it’s in those first few miles that you experience Route 66 the most, and it’s in the most remote areas that you really get to know the United States.
These are some of the books we recommend about Route 66:
New Zealand boasts some of the best car routes in the world. One of our favourites, without a doubt, is the Milford Road, but we also cannot fail to mention the Forgotten World Highway or the route along the west coast of the South Island.
The best car routes in the world: road to Milford Sound in New Zealand
If you also add that New Zealand is one of the best prepared countries in the world for travelling by motorhome or camper, it becomes a destination. Okay, it’s a long way away. But really, it’s very worthwhile.
Jordan, one of the great unknowns in the lists of the best car routes in the world
Jordan has been one of our great discoveries of the last year. It is one of the most exciting countries in the world: it has a lot of history and has a million landscapes that leave you speechless.
The best car routes in the world: Jordan
If we stick strictly to the topic we are dealing with in this post, there are two essential roads in Jordan: the one that borders the Dead Sea and goes to Aqaba and the one that runs between Petra and Amman, the capital, known as the road of kings.
Scotland was one of the first big road trips we published in this blog back in 2018. And how we enjoyed it!
The best car routes in the world: Scotland
In fact, we liked Scotland so much that we didn’t rule out going back to the northernmost part of the highlands, which was left to us on this first trip.
Ireland has a lot of driving routes that are worth doing. And I think we’ve done them all (or almost).
The best car routes in the world: Ireland
Without a doubt, we’re staying with Slea Head Drive on the Dingle Peninsula.
South of France
France is always a good choice for a road trip, that’s for sure. But the Midi-Pyrinees area has a special charm. We showed you that on our last route through the south of France.
The best car routes in the world: South of France
Tenerife, one of the best car routes in Spain
When we visited Tenerife we were so pleasantly surprised that we promised ourselves to visit each and every one of the islands that form the archipelago again.
The volcanic route on Teide is one of the most scenic routes we have ever done, but the whole island has beautiful roads.
The best car routes in the world: Tenerife
Motorhome route in Europe: France, Belgium and Holland
A few years ago, in 2015 to be precise, we took a beautiful and fleeting route in which we travelled through the heart of Eastern Europe in a motorhome.
The best routes by car in the world: a motorhome route in Europe
In our itinerary we travelled through Normandy, Paris, Leuven, Bruges or Amsterdam, among other places. And the reality is that no matter how you go about it, any trip of this kind around Europe, whatever the stops, is worthwhile.
The best car routes in the world that we want to do in the future
We confess, we have cheated a little here because we have brought in whole countries, but you will have to forgive us, because we could not help it.
In future posts we will talk about the routes through these countries, but they have so many and so beautiful, that we had to include them as a whole.
Don’t pay fees for paying or taking money out when you travel
✅ The best way to take out money or pay abroad is with travel cards 💳 They are your best ally to save as much as possible. These are our favourites (they include the discounts we have obtained for you 😉 ):
Revolut is one of the best changers when it comes to paying and taking out money. You can get it through our link.
N26 is the best option to pay without commissions. We haven’t got a discount for N26, but if you ask for it through our link, you help us to keep our Partners.
Bnext is great for getting money at the destination. There’s no more welcome promo on Bnext, but if you order it through our link, you’re helping us out a lot.
The best car routes in Europe
Portugal, route by car through the whole country
There are several routes that we have already taken through the country that is our home today: Serra da Estrela, Braga and Guimaraes, the Algarve…
But of all the routes that we have left to do in our adopted country, the ones that we want to do the most are the route through the Douro and the route through the Alentejo area.
The best car routes in the world: Serra da Estrela in Portugal
Spain, one of the countries with the best car routes
I don’t think I need to tell you about all the car routes you can take in Spain. We have a wonderful country.
Among all the routes that we want to do in our country, we highlight the Cantabrian, Andalusia and Catalonia.
The best routes by car in the world: route by the Cantabrian Sea in Spain
Norway as a whole, one of our dream routes
Travelling through the Nordic country from south to north is one of the road trips we most want to do. Skirt immense fjords, make the famous Trollstigen, continue along the impressive Atlantic Road and end up seeing the Northern Lights. Who gives more?
Without a doubt this is a recommendable route to do in mid-late spring, when the nine begins to set and the country is full of waterfalls.
The best car routes in the world: Norway
Icelandic Ring Road
This circular route through Iceland is one of our great travel dreams. With only one road and in 10 days you can travel through the whole country and enjoy its landscapes. It is without doubt another of the best routes by car in the world.
The day we do it, it’ll probably be with a camper.
Route through the Baltic countries: Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania
Since I visited Tallinn in 2018 this is a route that attracts a lot of attention. Getting to know the culture and history of the Baltics, seeing their spectacular landscapes, and visiting their three capitals is one of our most anticipated trips.
The best car routes in the world: The Baltics
This is certainly a trip to make by car, especially if you go in cold weather.
Amalfi Coast in Italy
Famous for hosting some of the most beautiful villages in Italy this route by car is perfect for a long weekend or bridge break.
All of Italy is quite a fashionable area, so we would avoid travelling in high season to avoid crowds.
Tuscany and Cinque Terre in Italy
Yes, we know it is a fashionable destination and maybe that is what has made us postpone the trip, but it is certainly one of those routes that should not be missed.
Dream villages by the coast, an interior full of green fields and places where food is a religion – what more could you ask for?
Dolomites in Italy
Defined by Le Cornusier as “the most beautiful natural architecture in the world”, these photographic mountains are located north of the Italian Alps.
The Great Route of the Dolomites covers 110 kilometres, so it can be a perfect route to do in a weekend flying to Venice or Milan (a little further).
Alsace in France
How many times have you seen pictures of fairytale villages in this part of France on Instagram? I’m sure you’ve seen a lot. And in my case, since I spent 15 days in Strasbourg thanks to an exchange when I was in high school, I really wanted to travel around this area in a car and calmly.
However, to do this route we will wait until it goes out of fashion 😉
The best car routes in America
West Coast of Canada
That Vancouver has been in my travel dreams for many years is a fact, but the reality is that it’s just an excuse to visit one of the most impressive natural areas in the world: the Canadian Rockies.
Banff National Park, Lake Louise, the glaciers or Jasper National Park are just some of the jewels you will find on this wonderful route.
US East Coast
We already did most of the West Coast (although we were dying to do it again) and that’s why we had prepared the East Coast for this year. It couldn’t be, but I don’t think it will take long to include this trip in our calendar again.
The best car routes in the world: East Coast of the USA
Boston, Philadelphia or New Orleans are some of the cities we most want to visit on this road trip.
Route 61 in USA
The United States is one of our favorite countries when it comes to car routes. So, of course, we are also looking forward to Route 61, which runs north-south from Chicago to New Orleans.
This is the perfect route for lovers of jazz and the old (and huge) plantations of the USA.
Route 40 to Patagonia in Argentina
Latin America has many routes that we want to do a lot, but this one from San Martin de los Andes to the Perito Moreno glacier is one of the most desirable.
Bariloche, El Bolsón or El Calafate are some of the stops of this 1,600-kilometer road trip.
Carretera Austral de Chile
We have the south of the American continent too forgotten, but that will change in the next few years, I promise. Another route that calls our attention in this area is the Carretera Austral through Chilean Patagonia from Puerto Montt to Villa O’Higgins.
The best car routes in Oceania
Great Ocean Road in Australia
We’re looking forward to Australia and, of course, to the Great Ocean Road, a route that runs along the country’s southern coast where you’ll see breathtaking cliffs, dreamy beaches, lots of nature and the highlight, the 12 apostles (of which there are fewer and fewer left).
No doubt we will do this route as part of a much longer caravan trip around Australia, as this route can be done in 1 or 2 days.
The best car routes in Africa
Free-Ride Safari on the Kruger in South Africa
We have always dreamed of doing a safari, and one of the most appetizing ones to do on your own is the one in Kruger National Park. This is a route to do in 3 or 4 days by car sleeping in the camps of the area.
To be able to see lions, giraffes, elephants and many other animals in the wild has to be impressive.
The best car routes in Asia
Vietnam by motorcycle
We know the heat and humidity in Southeast Asia, and we also know that Vietnam may not be the easiest country to travel in Asia, but touring the country in a motillo has to be an experience. Those of you who are familiar with Top Gear will surely remember its adventure.
1,700 kilometers from Ho Chi Min to Hanoi getting to know this spectacular country is something that should be unforgettable.
The books that inspire us to discover the best car routes in the world
Within our large traveling library we have several books that we use when we need inspiration to choose future destinations. Since we know you’re going to ask us about them (because they’re cool), we’ll leave them all here for you:
Books about the best car routes in the worldRoutard’s ROADTRIPS encyclopedia. This is undoubtedly one of our favourites. It gathers 40 routes around the world with the most important points of interest, history, time needed to cover them and even playlists recommended for each destination. For us it is a must.
Lonely Planet’s ‘En route through…’ guides. We love these guides because they make a simple and brilliant compilation of the most important routes in each country. A must on our trips.
Lonely Planet Planning Maps. We discovered this format relatively recently and can no longer live without it. The package includes a map with information about some of the most important points of interest in the country and a sticker sheet to configure the route directly on the map. Brutal
