Budget travel to New York 7 days

It’s been a while since we’ve had to talk about the budget for a trip to New York, because it’s usually one of the most important points when we’re considering a trip.

We hope to help you with this post to get an idea of the expenses involved in a trip to the Big Apple 7 days and serve as a reference when making your own budget for New York.

We have classified it into three types of budget: economic, medium and high.

ECONOMIC BUDGET: You’re dying to travel to New York but right now you don’t have all the money you’d like, even so you venture to visit the Big Apple with the right money even if you can’t see it all and do it all, you know you’ll come back later.
MEDIUM BUDGET: You want to save on some things but you also want to travel comfortably, have a private bathroom in your room, a decent hotel and save some days on meals (although others will give you a whim), you are not going to deprive yourself of seeing anything but you try to see that every dollar spent is well invested. This would be our budget right now.
HIGH BUDGET: You want to see and do everything you can and also travel very comfortably, stay in good hotels well located and do not skimp on meals in restaurants, you want to enjoy 100% of everything the city has to offer!

At the end of the post you have a comparative table with the three budgets so that you can see a summary and more visual budget to travel to New York 7 days.

NEW YORK BUDGET 7 DAYS

Flight expenses

In the New York budget we have omitted the issue of flights because, although it is an important expense, it depends largely on the city of origin, the dates and the time in advance with which you buy the flight.

Generally speaking, a return flight from Madrid or Barcelona of less than €400/person is very good value.

From 400€ to 600€ would be a normal price.
More than 600€ would be a high price.

But keep in mind that if we fly in August, Christmas or on public holidays, a normal price can be 700€/person.

Accommodation expenses

The prices are approximate and depending on the time of year you are travelling and the advance booking you are making will vary greatly.

We recommend that you check the prices for your dates and be able to have a more precise travel budget.

Economic budget → 500€ to 600€/double room

These would be some examples of inexpensive accommodations in New York well located, both are in Manhattan.

Can you sleep for less money in New York? Yes, but you will be farther away, you will have to share a room or travel in very low season, for example February.

WEST SIDE YMCA: 73€ x 7 nights= 511€/double room and semi-private bathroom. In this one we have lodged us, it is very justifiable but if only you think to go to sleep it is enough, it is very well located.
POD 51: 87€ x 7 nights =609€/ double room with private bathroom.

In the post of cheap accommodation in New York we talk in more detail about some of them.

Average budget → 1200€ to 1500€/ double room

These two hotels that we recommend you lower prices a lot in low season, but can also be a little higher in summer or important dates.

POD TIMES SQUARE: 172€ x 7 nights = 1204€/double room with bathroom. We stayed here on our last visit to New York, it’s next to Times Square, it was a success.

High budget → +2000€/ double room

ROOM MATE GRACE BOUTIQUE: 385€ x 7 nights = 2695€/double room with bathroom. It’s a Spanish chain and the receptionists are usually Spanish most of the time, it’s a super modern and very cool hotel!

Meal expenses

Economic budget → 350€ to 490€ per couple

This budget would be eating at budget places like McDonald’s burgers, $1 slices of pizza, hot dogs, Whole Foods takeout (a little more healthy).

Approximately 25€/35€ per person per day.

Average budget → 630€ to 840€ per couple

Combining economic places with some mythical restaurants of the city as Ellen Stardust or KATZ’s, some brunch in our prefered place The Butcher’s Daughter or to have some capricious breakfast in Tiffany’s.

Also visiting Starbucks more than once so that caffeine levels don’t drop…

Approximately 45€/60€ per person per day.

High budget → 1120€ per couple

Meals in restaurants do not usually fall below 25€ per person, not counting drinks, from then on we can spend whatever we want!

Approximately 80€ per person per day.

Transport costs

Metrocard unlimited travel 7 days → 60€ per couple

There is not much saving at this point, we recommend you to buy the Metrocard with unlimited journeys that cost 30€/person.

To move in taxi or Uber is clear that it increases a little the expense, but in occasions it is not the recommended option because big traffic jams are formed and we can take more time in arriving at the destiny.

New York Subway

Transfers from the airport

Here the budget varies depending on the option we choose, we tell you much more about this topic in the post on how to get from JFK airport to Manhattan with all the options and recommendations.

In all budgets we are counting back and forth from JFK airport.

Economic budget → 20€ per couple in public transport

We can use the Metrocard that will serve us for the seven days in the city and move with the subway, this way we will only have to pay the AirTrain that costs $5 per person and trip.

Average budget → 80€ per couple in shared transfer

Transfer in shared transport that will take us directly to the door of our hotel and will pick us up on the last day, the price is 20€ per person and journey. More info to book here.

High budget → 180€ per couple in private transfer

Transfer by private car from the airport to the hotel and vice versa. They will be waiting for you with a sign and your chauffeur will drop you off at the door of the hotel, it is the most comfortable.

The price of the transfer is per vehicle up to three people. More info to book here.

Travel insurance costs

Iati Estrella Insurance → 104€ per couple

Iati Estrella insurance with cancellation → 110€ per couple

*Prices with 5% discount applied.

Don’t forget to take out a good travel insurance, it doesn’t increase the travel budget to New York so much and I’d say it’s indispensable!

Do not skimp on this point even if you travel on a tight budget because it can be much more expensive, health care in the United States is one of the most expensive in the world, if anything happens to you will have to face a good bill.

We recommend that you take a travel insurance that takes care of everything from the zero minute and you don’t have to advance even a single dollar, in this case Iati fulfills this task as well as offering one of the highest medical assistance coverage in the market.

Remember that you have a 5% discount taking out your insurance from our link.
