The Vessel: What is it?

Inaugurated on March 15, 2019 in the surroundings of Hudson Yards, at the sight of one more visitor The Vessel is a building full of stairs, through which tourists go up and down like crazy looking for the perfect perspective to take the best picture of the place.

For its creator, the British Thomas Heatherwick, The Vessel is something more… With its design, Thomas wanted to give life to a structure that visitors could touch and use. A mixture of a building, a monument, an elevated park, a work of art…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

If one thing is clear, it is that The Vessel is the most famous and photographed element of Hudson Yards to this day. And it’s right here.

The Vessel: its design

Just by looking at Thomas Heatherwick’s website it was clear that the design of The Vessel was not going to leave anyone indifferent.

After projects such as the redesign of the London buses, the Paddington rolling bridge or the flame of the London Olympic Games, The Vessel chose to develop the idea of a structure that could be climbed and explored. That’s why they were inspired by those typical Indian cisterns of which we’ve all seen some image, full of stairs that seem to go up to infinity at the same time and go nowhere.

The Vessel consists of 87 pieces of carbon steel that were carefully built in Italy and transported by sea to Newark. Once there, they sailed the Hudson to its current location in Hudson Yards.

How many stairs does it have? What about floors?

No less than 2500 steps, spread over 154 flights of stairs and some 80 platforms run along its perimeter.

Don’t be afraid, if you can’t or want to climb such a ladder. There is an elevator that takes you from the feet of the structure to the top. This elevator gives priority to people with reduced mobility and baby carts, okay? Although the ascent can be done in an elevator, it ends up in one of those 80 platforms (among the highest). Once there, if you have problems going up and down steps, you won’t be able to go much further than this platform.

The Vessel reaches 46 meters in height (equivalent to its 16 floors) and allows a maximum occupancy of 700 people at the same time, so it is necessary to get an entrance to visit the interior.

How to get free tickets for The Vessel?

Congratulations Molaviajeros! At least for the moment, it is possible to visit The Vessel for free and to get the tickets for it is very simple.

There are two ways to get tickets to The Vessel.

Online tickets for The Vessel

The first of these is by accessing this website: You’ll see there are two types of tickets.

Some are free, cost zero euros. When you enter to make the reservation, you must select the day and time you have scheduled the visit. Just enter your data and let them send you the tickets to the email along with a QR that will give you access to The Vessel. Please note that it can only be purchased two weeks in advance, ie if your trip is within a month you will have to wait 😉

Others cost $10. As you can see… but with free tickets, it’s not a plan that we find very attractive…

What’s the difference between the free tickets for The Vessel and the $10 tickets? The free ones have a specific date and time, while the $10 ones are for the day that suits you best and you can enter at any time from 10:00 in the morning until 20:00 in the afternoon. At a time that’s best for you.

Tickets for The Vessel “at the box office.”

If you’ve prepared a whirlwind trip to New York and stood up at Hudson Yards without a ticket to The Vessel, don’t worry. Tickets for The Vessel can be obtained there, early in the morning, for the same day.

The only downside to this is that even if you can get The Vessel tickets on the spot, they’ll be for that day and you’ll probably have to wait for your turn to visit to mark the ticket. That is to say, it is not to get the tickets and enter, but to wait for your turn to arrive. They are taken in these lockers or kiosks that you see in the photo

Most searched photos

In your album you will find photos of the whole of The Vessel, or the views of the Hudson, or the buildings next door, or a selfie of yourselves reflected in the exterior structure. No…

But the curious thing is that one of the most repeated photos of The Vessel, is at the entrance of the building. There you’ll see a blue circle on the floor. Many people usually leave their mobile in the centre of the blue circle, with the countdown programmed, to make a selfie of themselves on a background of blue The Vessel.
