Travelling to New Zealand from Spain: How do we fly to New Zealand?

The first thing we are going to tell you is the option we chose to travel to New Zealand from Spain. In our case we travelled from Madrid with Emirates, the company of the Emirate of Dubai, so we stopped in the capital of that Emirate. We chose this company because it fulfilled all the points we were looking for on the flight to New Zealand:

1. Single-stop trip

The usual thing when travelling to New Zealand from Spain is to make at least two stopovers, one in Europe and one in Asia, both in Asia, or one in Asia and one in Australia.

We wanted to spend as little time as possible on the trip (we wanted to spend as many days as possible in New Zealand) so we needed a trip with only one stopover even if the second flight Dubai-Auckland lasted 15 and a half hours (and 17 on the way back).

2. Not too long a journey

As you can imagine, we were looking for a trip not too long, as far as possible. It didn’t have to be the shortest, but we didn’t want to spend more than 30 hours flying so that the trip, which is already very long, wouldn’t take forever.

3. Short but realistic scale

We were looking for a scale not too long (there are even 8 and 10 hours), but at the same time that was ‘realistic’, ie, more than an hour and a half, in case there was any delay in the first flight (as we ended up happening at the end).

Only Qatar and Emirates companies offered this option when we bought the flights, so we chose Emirates because we felt more like flying with them (their planes are super comfortable and the service on board is great, something that is essential for such long flights) and the price was quite similar.

We pay just under 1,400 euros per person for the Madrid-Dubai-Auckland flights with Emirates.

In our case the outward journey was supposed to take a little less than 26 hours (with a stopover of about two hours and 50 minutes, which actually became much less because we had to run to catch the second flight in Dubai) but because of the fog the first flight lasted much longer and it took us about 28 hours in total to get to Auckland.

On the way back everything went perfectly and the trip took just under 28 hours (with a two-hour stopover). This time it took longer because the flight from Auckland to Dubai is an hour and a half longer than the one way.

What is the cheapest way to travel to New Zealand from Spain?

Whenever we talk to you about how to find cheap flights, we give you the same tips, but they are usually the common denominator for finding bargains. They’re next:

It is important that you look at the flights well in advance, because then it will be much easier to find good prices.
Flights in the low season will be much cheaper. If you want to fly cheaply to New Zealand avoid the months of December, January and February. One of the cheapest months to travel to New Zealand is September, but keep in mind that it will be cold and in many areas there will be snow.

You can stop off in Beijing and Sydney, for example.
Although it all depends on possible one-off offers from each airline, normally the cheapest airlines to travel to New Zealand are Air China or Etihad, both with two stopovers, and the trip usually lasts between 32 and 36 hours.

✅ The best way to get money or pay abroad are the travel cards 💳 your best allies to save as much as possible on your trips. Here we review the most important ones, we tell you their advantages and disadvantages and we offer you all the discounts and offers that we have obtained for you 😉. For example, if you order your Bnext card through our link and you top up 25 euros, you get another 5. The N26 card, on the other hand, is the best option for paying without commissions when you travel.

Anyway, as we always say, everything depends on punctual offers, so we strongly recommend you to create a price alert in Skyscanner to be aware of possible price decreases. And if you find a cheap flight… Buy it!

Can you fly directly to New Zealand from Spain?

No, you can’t. At least at the time we wrote this post. To travel to New Zealand from Spain you need to make at least one stopover, which is usually in the Middle East.

What is the fastest way to travel to New Zealand from Spain?

The fastest way to travel to New Zealand from Spain is the option we choose, with a stopover in the Middle East and direct flight from there to, usually, Auckland (which is not the capital of New Zealand but receives most international flights).

✅ One of the most important things to consider when preparing a trip is insurance. Never travel without insurance! Why don’t you save up all year so that your vacation will be twisted by an unforeseen event. And so that in addition to traveling safely, you save, we have for you this 5% discount on your insurance with IATI, the insurance company we trust for all our trips.

Still, keep in mind that it is not a short trip, because the fastest option is at least 25 and a half hours of travel. So… prepare books, hobbies and entertainment enough!
